Why is it important?
Cardiac auscultation is still an important and cost-effective screening method for the physician. Cardiac auscultation skills are inadequate, probably due to inappropriate use of instrumental diagnostics. New technological advances such as the electronic stethoscope, handheld ultrasound devices, and simulationbased medical education are a useful support to improve auscultation. A balanced strategy, combining the clinical method with new digital technology to enhance learning, would be desirable.
Perspectives
It is hoped that this article will stimulate clinicians to rediscover their clinical skills, combining the clinical bedside with technological innovations.
