Tremendous sucess has been recently made in understanding the underlying mechanisms and the nature of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare disease of the monocyte, macrophage and dendritic cell system. This paper summarizes new findings (e.g. gene mutations and affected cellular pathways) pertinent to disease biology , as well as their implications for monitoring of disease activity and targeted treatment of patients with LCH.
