Why is it important?

Hospital medicine is growing internationally and there are grass roots efforts to start programs around the world. However, many of these groups are still operating against a back drop of widespread lack of awareness about this field in their individual countries. This paper attempts to shed light on the movement that started in the U.S twenty years ago and is now an international movement and individual groups can share this with their institutions and countries. Further, this paper attempts to link these groups together by highlighting their common struggles/challenges in starting their programs. Hopefully, shared solutions that can be applied globally will emerge as international hospital groups reflect on their shared experiences.

Perspectives

As an individual who has worked to help establish hospital medicine internationally, I wrote this paper to share with hospitalists that they now have colleagues internationally who are having similar rewards and challenges. This paper aimed to expand the community of hospitalists beyond the U.S.
