What is it about?

Adults have effective ways of controlling heart rate but what about the embryo ? This paper explores possible mechanisms that the embryo uses to control its heart rate in response to changes in oxygen levels.

Why is it important?

Our findings confirmed that the embryo has little ability to control heart rate being highly dependent on oxygen supply and ATP levels. However we were able to increase heart rate in hypoxic conditions by use of the chemical colforsin.
