What is it about?

Metabolic syndrome (MeS) is a combination of metabolic disturbances including blood sugar and lipids derangements, near to high blood pressure, systemic inflammation and truncal obesity. We showed that the severity of MeS, notably systemic inflammation, is inversely related to vitamin D deficiency.

Why is it important?

MeS increases the risk of many chronic diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancers. The main treatment of MeS is modifying life style and keeping weight healthy. However, correcting vitamin D deficiency may also lessen the risk of occurrence of later MeS comorbidities.

Perspectives

Poor vitamin D status may contribute to the systemic inflammation often seen in obesity, thus favoring other metabolic derangements like insulin resistance and raised blood glucose. The possible anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin D must be evaluated in the controlled clinical trials
