What is it about?

I work in respiratory medicine focusing mainly on two types of obstructive airway diseases, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I look at the different occupational and environmental exposures that could cause these diseases and also look at the various molecular mechanisms and pathways of them.

Why is it important?

With COPD becoming the only major disease increasing worldwide and fast becoming the third leading cause of death, it is imperative to find better drugs to relieve symptoms to reduce morbidity and decrease exacerbations toreduce the impact of the disease on the quality of life and survival prospects of millions of patients.

Perspectives

Aclidinium and Formoterol provide a potential addition to the treatment armamentarium of COPD where the choices are limited and the disease is progressive in many.Questions remain as to its impact in reducing frequent exacerbations and relative advantages over other similar combinations and these will be addressed once the current research ongoing reaches its logical conclusions.
