What is it about?

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are widely used anti-malarial and anti-rheumatic drugs. Our finding indicated its potential use in reducing the cardiovascular risk of in its consumers.

Why is it important?

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have been widely used in clinical practice for decades, proven to be safe and at low risk of severe safety events. Our study suggested a protective effect of cardiovascular events of the two drugs in rheumatic patients, indicating a potential use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for patients with the cardiovascular prevention as the primary purpose.

Perspectives

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are associated with reduced cardiovascular events in rheumatic patients. Randomized trials in non-rheumatic patients are now warranted.
