What is it about?

The aim of this study was to measure various microparticles from different cellular origins in COPD patients with a reliable flow cytometric method for diagnostic purposes.

Why is it important?

A novel observation of our study that not only endothelial derived microparticles (MPs) are elevated in exacerbated COPD but also platelet-derived CD41+ and CD42a+ and monocyte-derived CD14+ MPs also take a significant part in COPD exacerbations.

Perspectives

Elevated microparticle values in exacerbated COPD patients may help to recognize disease progression and to start adequate therapy to achieve a better clinical outcome.
