Why is it important?

The diagnosis of asthma in the elderly is very difficult because in addition to the atypical symptoms that commonly occur in the elderly, normal spirometry does not rule out doença.Os other tests are invasive and difficult achievement .A dosage of exhaled nitric oxide fraction (FENO) it is easy to perform and noninvasive.

Perspectives

This study showed that the dose of FENO in the elderly is directly related to asthma, or in elderly people with nitric oxide exhaled values were considerably higher than in the elderly not asmáticos.Isto enables an early diagnosis of asthma in the elderly, mainly of exacerbations, which are important causes of mortality in this age group
