What is it about?

This article discusses the causes of why the elderly patients develop temporary or permanent lapses of higher mental functions, who are at high risk and how best can this disturbing phenomenon be prevented.

Why is it important?

All over the world the elderly population is increasing because of advances in health care and people are living longer. This also puts an additional responsibility on the health personnel caring for the elderly because there will be a proportional increase in surgeries and diagnostic interventions they will undergo,often under anaesthesia.

Perspectives

As the global population of the elderly shows a steep upward trend and more advanced surgeries are going to be performed on them because of the diseases which accompany ageing,it is important to maintain their quality of life.It is important to ensure that they do not become dependent on others for their daily routine. How are we to do this?
