What is it about?

A new device called BTrackS was used to measure how well older adults controlled their body sway before and after 90 days of exercise training (Geri-Fit program). Geri-Fit was very effective in improving body sway control of those people with the highest level of fall risk determined by BTrackS.

Why is it important?

Falls in the elderly are a significant public health issue across the world. This work suggests that balance screening with BTrackS could identify those people with the highest risk of falling, and that Geri-Fit exercise training can be used to reduce the number of falls experienced.

Perspectives

This is a significant publication as the tool described for balance screening and tracking (BTrackS) is objective, accurate and reliable. BTrackS is also highly portable and affordable, making it an ideal means of addressing fall risk in many domains such as hospitals, senior living facilities and physical therapy clinics.
