What is it about?

In this study, we compared attitudes toward older people among people living in Burundi and in Belgium in order to examine how attitudes vary in different socio-economic and cultural contexts. As hypothesized, we found that the lack of government spending on older people (pension and healthcare systems) in Burundi contribute to their younger counterparts perceiving them more negatively than in Belgium, despite stronger cultural traditions of familial solidarity in Burundi.

Why is it important?

Our findings suggest the necessity of the availability of more social and economic resources for older’ healthcare in the least developed countries to improve attitudes toward them among their younger counterparts.
