What is it about?

Dermatitis (eczema) has many causes, and often more than one cause in the same person. Some dermatitis can be cured by modifying the skin environment, for example by patch testing to identify allergens in personal care products and using alternative products, or by treating a pet for mites. Sometimes an internal condition causes a rash that mimics dermatitis, and specific treatment aimed at the underlying condition can help.

Why is it important?

Checklists can help your physician recall every diagnostic test to consider to provide the most precise treatment for your dermatitis. If a precise cause cannot be found, dermatitis may be treated with medicines that suppress your immune system, but these drugs can have serious adverse effects.

Perspectives

Checklists have improved patient safety for medical and surgical procedures. I hope that checklists can also be used to reduce diagnostic error.
