Why is it important?

We are at a moment in history where more and more children and youth are showing up as gender diverse and simultaneously more controversies are surfacing in the field as to what is in the best interests of these youth, who have heretofore sometimes experienced harm rather than help in the hands of those who care for them. As a vulnerable population, It is important to make sure we are doing well rather than doing harm with these children.

Perspectives

As the Director of Mental Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at the University of California San Francisco, I devote my time to either working directly with children and their families or conducting research about them, and this is a moment in history where a sea change is occurring in our understanding, and each day I am learning something new from the youth themselves. In writing this article, I hope to share what I'm learning so more people can know how to meet up with a gender diverse youth when such a youth comes their way.
