What is it about?

Family members have gradually taking the role of caregiving towards mental patients. This paper address the issues of psychological distress among the family caregivers and to see whether perceived stigma and their coping strategies used associate with their distress level.

Why is it important?

Our findings showed that approximately one-third of the caregivers which were from Malaysia were distressed. Community rejection was associated with distress. Some coping methods that they used were maladaptive hence they were not suitable to be used by the caregivers during the caregiving process.

Perspectives

Not much studies about family caregivers of schizophrenia patients has been done in Malaysia. This study provides and insight on different psychological factors which can better target a more efficient program to enhance their caregiving process.
