Why is it important?
Our findings suggest that the relation between adherence to inhaled corticostroids and asthma control is more complex than we used to think. We suggest that there is a bidirectional relation between both: good adherence helps to improve asthma control, but children with good asthma control may be less motivated to adhere to therapy.
Perspectives
Our main fingings (children with more asthma exacerbations are more adherent to ICS) do not easily fit into our established conceptual framework that ICS therapy improves asthma outcomes. However, if looked closer at the underlying mechanisms, it is rather surprising that only a hand full of studies have been published with similar findings.
