What is it about?
Antibacterial activity is one of the unique biomedical applications of gold nanorods. In this work, we studied the antibacterial activity of gold nanorods taking into consideration two commonly "ignored" artifacts which are: 1) the colloidal stability of the nanoparticles when mixed with the bacterial growth media and 2) the possible contribution of impurities in the nanorod solutions to the reported and observed antibacterial activity.

Why is it important?
Two important artifacts of the antimicrobial effect of gold nanoparticles were probed in this study. Two significant findings are that: 1) cationic gold nanoparticles were aggregated when mixed with the bacterial growth media and 2) free impurity present in gold nanorod suspensions is the origin of the observed antibacterial activity. These two overlooked controls are important in preventing misinterpretation and artifacts of the observed and reported antibacterial activity of these nanoparticles.
Perspectives
I hope this article highlights the significant of some practices that are usually ignored in the published studies and may explain the significant conflicting results.
