In this article, I felt it imperative to provide a balanced, nuanced perspective on ChatGPT's growing role in medical education. Having witnessed firsthand the awe and enthusiasm students exhibit for this technology, I understand its vast potential as a learning tool. I personally use ChatGPT and similar large language models daily. However, I have also observed concerning behaviors, like plagiarism or withdrawn interpersonal skills, that reveal ChatGPT's unintended consequences. My goal was to acknowledge both sides in an objective manner. The enthusiastic student in me sees ChatGPT's possibilities to enhance education through personalized instruction and experiential learning. But the seasoned educator in me knows that such a disruptive technology could also impair the humanistic values at the heart of medicine without oversight and structure. That is why I strived to offer pragmatic solutions. My hope is that this article will provide medical schools with a framework for integrating ChatGPT responsibly, allowing students to benefit from its capabilities while also developing the well-rounded critical thinking, ethics, and teamwork that society expects from its future doctors. I believe with careful guidance, ChatGPT can empower students without compromising the integrity of medical education.
