What is it about?

The Space Transportation System Committee of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) has been continuously formulating medium- to long-term strategies in the field of space transportation systems since FY2018. The authors summarize the strategies and their concrete implementation measures over the next two decades.

Why is it important?

A science community of space transportation system field under the Inter-University Research Institute System of ISAS/JAXA has consented to implement the research and development activities that are described the paper. The R&D activities illustrated in the paper have been already conducting since FY2018.

Perspectives

The mission plans the development of STSs, which are an essential technology for deep space exploration, over the next 20 years. The selected strategies aim to develop an interorbital transportation network system, including a space plane system, to achieve frequent and mass transportation of humans and cargo. We identified three pillars of the system technology field, identified the challenges, established the development objects, and presented the roadmap for technology demonstration. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because this manuscript reaches beyond the space community and will foster understanding in other technological fields and human society at large.
