What is it about?

This research seeks to measure the change in user privacy attitudes and behaviour toward Facebook after examining the data Facebook collects about them using a software tool called Data Selfie. The results show that using Data Selfie increased user’s privacy concern. This increase in privacy concern was especially prominent in participants prior to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. However, it did not seem to change their behaviour on Facebook.

Why is it important?

It is important for us to understand whether the behaviour of consumers' social media can be changed without intervention by government.

Perspectives

This study demonstrated the limitations of media reports about Facebook actions. While Facebook continues to be criticized for its data practices, consumers have shown little will to leave the platform. It may be that government action will be necessary to reduce Facebook's power and dominance in the digital landscape.
