The new city Cyberjaya is dedicated to the digital economy and relevant international companies and research institutes. It is full of symbols to stress its modernity. These symbols are explained and interpreted.

Why is it important?
This paper represents a novel way to interpret urbanization and urban development. Rather than looking at the economic output or the labour force, it attempts to use cultural analysis to unravel the importance of Cyberjaya to national Malaysian ambitions to develop into a fully developed country by 2020.
Perspectives
This article was written jointly with a Malaysian colleague who now occupies a higher civil service position in the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya, Malaysia's administrative capital.
