What is it about?
We compared human and livestock Staphylococcus aureus isolates using phenotypic tests, microarrays and spa typing. Many strains were genetically and phenotypically similar, supporting the possibility of transmission between different hosts. Differences in antibiotic resistance and virulence profiles were linked more strongly to geographic origin than to whether the strains came from humans or animals. No single genetic feature clearly separated human isolates from livestock isolates.

Why is it important?
The findings highlight the close relationship between human and animal S. aureus populations. Monitoring these bacteria through a One Health approach may help identify transmission routes, track antimicrobial resistance and improve infection prevention.
Perspectives
This publication is especially important to us because it shows how closely connected human and animal Staphylococcus aureus populations can be. We found it particularly striking that geographic origin appeared to influence strain characteristics more strongly than the host itself. Our findings reinforce the value of a One Health approach and highlight the need for coordinated surveillance across human and veterinary medicine.
