What is it about?

This paper discusses the ways in which learners of Italian demonstrate politeness when apologising via email. The paper also identifies and explores three strategies which may impact expressions of politeness: social distance, status, and the severity of the offence.

Why is it important?

There is very little work which explores the Italian-Australian intercultural context, and few scholars have discussed and compared the performance of apologies in Italian and English. Thus, this paper explores apologies in a new context.

Perspectives

It was interesting, but not surprising, to find that while elements of Australian English politeness and Italian politeness were present in the learners' responses, they tended to favour Australian English norms. This may have implications for language teaching.
