What is it about?
A number of key journal articles and conference papers are reviewed that relate current trends and challenges for bionic and prosthetic development. We discriminate world regional development activity and explore the interplay of performance and cost with these new devices. A simple utility decision model is presented that shows macro developmental direction for these devices.

Why is it important?
Product Development for bionics and prosthetics is and will continue to be extremely interesting to many people because it so directly impacts human life value and supports independence for suffering people who have lost limbs. The scourge of diabetes is actually increasing the incidence of limb loss globally. Our paper takes a look at cost impacts to prosthetics. Third world citizens have no access to higher cost prosthetic devices and even first world citizens have difficulty paying for higher cost bionic and prosthetic devices. We explore the tradeoffs of performance and cost which is important to everyone.
Perspectives
This project was done voluntarily with free work from recent former graduate students and their professor mentor in Industrial, Systems and Bio Engineering at Wayne State University. This research was lacking simply because more focus in bionic and prosthetic devices is directed to high cost break through technologies. While this research will eventually result in helping the world, people with current limb loss cannot wait. What they can currently afford is the best they can get. Decision analysis on supporting disabled people now is needed!
