What is it about?

This article explores the use of poster presentations as an alternative assessment in higher education, focusing on undergraduate English students studying with an open university in Thailand. Traditional assessment methods are questioned due to the rise of AI tools. The paper details a positive poster presentation assessment, highlighting its potential. The article advocates for further research to understand student perceptions, particularly regarding apprehension during oral presentations. The proposed research includes pre-course questionnaires and post-assessment surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of poster presentations in bridging communication gaps in the type of remote education that the students experience.

Why is it important?

This study is important for several reasons. Firstly, it addresses the evolving challenges in higher education assessment methodologies, acknowledging the limitations of traditional approaches in the era of increasing accessibility to Artificial Intelligence tools. The exploration of alternative methods, specifically poster presentations, reflects a proactive response to the changing educational landscape. Secondly, the focus on remote undergraduate students, particularly those studying English in Thailand through an open university, is significant. With the growing prevalence of remote learning, understanding effective assessment methods for students in such settings becomes crucial. The study sheds light on the potential of poster presentations to engage and assess students who primarily study in a remote environment, providing insights that could benefit similar educational contexts globally. Moreover, the emphasis on student perceptions, especially regarding apprehension during oral presentations, contributes to the broader conversation about addressing student anxieties in the learning process. The study's intention to bridge communication gaps created by the nature of remote study adds a practical dimension to the research, aiming to enhance the overall learning experience for students in non-traditional educational settings.

Perspectives

This article proposes that research is needed into the use of poster presentations in higher education as a means of assessment and in helping students to develop their oral communication skills. It also suggests that we need to know more about how students perceive poster presentations and therefore how useful they are in helping to develop presentation skills There is currently only a small body of literature on this topic.
