What is it about?

This article explores the use of a role-play simulation to enhance oral communication skills in formal meetings for Accounting and Finance students. The activity fosters conflict resolution in a business setting, promoting reflection on key graduate competencies like 'Influencing,' 'Teamwork,' and 'Listening.' Students' competency choices are generally based on their task importance.

Why is it important?

There are several reasons why this study might be considered important. Firstly, it highlights the often overlooked area of formal meeting communication skills compared to the widely researched area of public speaking. Then, by simulating business meetings, the study offers a practical approach to the development of communication skills, giving students expereince of the type of unplanned oral communication demands of the world of employment. In doing this it also shows how opportunities are provided for students to reflect on key graduate competencies such as 'Influencing,' 'Teamwork,' and 'Listening.'

Perspectives

With so much of the research into oral communication apprehension focussed on public speaking, it was felt that the generally neglected area of formal meetings warranted investigation. Fortunately, research data from the role-play simulation activity was available for three occasions on which it had been used.
