What is it about?

This paper reports upon the use of short video recordings of specific laboratory techniques, instructions about chemicals, how to use certain pieces of equipment etc... which were embedded as links within the students laboratory handbook. Using a mobile device held over the link the student could view these video instructions as and when they needed them.

Why is it important?

Students are often very nervous when they enter the science lab for the first time and can be reticent about trying out new things. As tutors we found that students were continually asking for support and often having to wait around until a tutor was available to help them. By providing 'just-in-time' instructions that allowed students to access how to do a specific technique they were unsure about we found that engagement within practical sessions was increased.
