What is it about?

Character strengths are usually measured through self-report questionnaires - e.g Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS). A number of studies indicate, however, that observer ratings of personal characteristics, like character strenghts or personality, give a more precise picture of the actual characteristic. In this study, we show how twelve different character strengths can be measured through an observational instrument (OBSCIF - OBServation of Character In Field), and demonstrate that OBSCIF is a valid and reliable way of measuring these character strengths.

Why is it important?

There are very few, if any, instruments for measuring character strengths though observation, even though we know that there is a need for these kind of instruments.

Perspectives

Even though OBSCIF is developed for use in military academies, the 38 items are phrased in a rather general way, and can thus be used in other settings outside the military service. We hope that researchers and practioners interested in character strengths will use OBSCIF, and help us til collect more data on how it functions in other settings.
