What is it about?

The role of Cortisone injection in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is controversial. Our paper shows that a high percentage of patients report relief of symptoms after injection and that 30% of those who had injection remained symptom free at 1 year.

Why is it important?

Many other authors have reported on injections for carpal tunnel in a diverse group of patients. This series included only patients who had had nerve tests and the results of those tests showed carpal tunnel but only in the mild to moderate range. We excluded patients with severe abnormalities on testing as it is the authors feeling that those patients are best treated with surgery.

Perspectives

I think this highlights that injection is a viable option for carpal tunnel and for this selected set of patients has superior results to those described in most other papers.
