Why is it important?

By defining what is expected of an orthopaedic surgeon in general practice or one who takes emergency call, assures a standard that must be meet by training programs, certification bodies, and also provides the medical community with an expectation of what should be expected from an orthopaedic surgeon. This report provides the beginnings of a process to define these competencies. It is important that orthopaedic surgeons, the medical profession and patients and healthcare payers provide input as the end result could determine residency education and certification requirements.

Perspectives

I feel that this work has identified some interesting facts about what is considered important for the an orthopaedic surgeon to be able to do. This is important as it has the potential to better determine how orthopaedic surgeons should be trained. IT also provides the community of p[patients and other healthcare workers with expectations of a orthopaedic surgeon who wishes to be in general practice and/or take call for emergencies.
