It is important to understand that this is NOT an incrimination of the direct anterior approach, but rather a contribution to a greater understanding of the inherent risks that must be balanced with the proposed benefits. All surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty have risks and benefits, and the direct anterior approach is a good approach for those comfortable doing it and for patients who seek it. However, it is not a panacea and carries unique risks that should be disclosed to patients and strategies developed to minimize these risks when teaching the approach to surgeons.
