What is it about?

The study established an extensive inventory of medicinal herbs used by HIV positive people in Lesotho and determined the proportion of HIV positive people who frequently use the herbs, what they use them for and how they prepare them. A literature search on the safety of the herbs was also conducted.

Why is it important?

In a population ravaged by HIV and AIDS, an inventory of medicinal herbs used by people living with HIV (PLHIV) is imperative. The inventory is crucial for researchers interested in learning about the efficacy of the herbs, their toxicities and compatibility with clinical antiretroviral drugs. The inventory is also important to clinicians treating PLHIV.

Perspectives

Although the inventory is far from being complete, the work highlights the need to establish inventories of medicinal herbs used by various patient groups in populations that use herbs concurrently with clinical drugs.
