What is it about?

This paper focused on conducting a detailed review of literature on current research and policy on urban land use and services structural organisation in Africa. The rationale was that understanding the different land uses in Africa's urban areas and the trends that are occurring across the continent would assist in relating them to the spatial land use planning and distribution of urban services in the region.

Why is it important?

This publication is valuable to the scientific community as it offers a complete synthesis of current research and policy frameworks as they relate to urban land use and services provision in African towns and cities.

Perspectives

It is hoped that by systematically analysing literature across multiple settings, this study identifies important structural and institutional barriers that prevent fair urban development. It is also presumed that the results add to a detailed understanding of the complex relationships that may exist between spatial planning, governance, and services access—issues that I think are crucial for sustainable urbanization. It is my view that this study sets a solid platform for future research and informed decisions in urban studies and development planning.
