What is it about?

In a world grappling with surging population and heightened food demands, the strain on agricultural systems leads to soil degradation. Enter Soil Quality Indexes (SQIs) – innovative tools developed to enhance soil quality. Yet, the diverse nature of soils and SQIs has historically complicated result analysis. Our spotlight centers on a groundbreaking study, employing a unified weighted SQI methodology (SQI U) to assess soil quality in intensive agricultural settings. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 65 observations reveal chemical indicators dominate SQI U findings, highlighting a concerning negative impact of conventional soil management (-7.55%). Amidst this, the study underlines the pivotal role of key indicators like cation exchange capacity (CEC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). With a promise to revolutionize global soil quality interpretation, SQI U emerges as a vital tool, offering a straightforward lens to assess soil health in agricultural landscapes worldwide.
