Discharge in rivers is often estimated using indirect means of developing rating curve. The present paper proposes simple spreadsheet based optimization technique to develop discharge rating curve and compares it with GA. I has been observed that in most of the cases rating curve spreadsheet based optimization is as reliable as GA.

Perspectives

In most of the cases of water resource engineering optimization problems are too simple to be solved by population based optimization technique rather gradient based technique may be used to search optimal solution.
