Perspectives

Since triiodothyronine (T3) is the bioactive form of thyroid hormone, the relatively higher percentage of T3 and lower percentage of thyroxin (T4) in guinea fowls compared with mammals and other birds may explain the higher body temperature in giune fowls compared with mammals. More studies are needed to demonstrate the relationship between thyroid hormone and hyperactivity and high metabolic rate in birds like guine fowls.
