What is it about?

There are 1943 elemental sounds that are known as Dhatus. These sounds form the basis of the Sanskrit Language. The earliest book available that lists these Dhatus is known as the Kashika Vritti. These Dhatus are from the Dhatupatha, an appendix to the book named Ashtadhyayi of Panini credited to the sage Panini circa 600 BC.

Why is it important?

Most Dhatupathas available today are indexed alphabetically and not sequentially in Panini order. Again, these dhatupathas mention the accents for each Dhatu but do not write the accent as part of the Dhatu. So a critical need was felt for such a work. This book gives all the 1943 Dhatus in the correct sequence and with accents. It also gives relevant sutra from the Ashtadhyayi for each Dhatu that is difficult to conjugate.

Perspectives

For the English audience, an accurate and complete Dhatupatha is hard to find in the first place. Accented Dhatus are a rarity. Complete information of a Dhatu such as Conjugation group, Parasmayepada/Atmanepada, English Meaning, iii/1 Verb rupa, and Transitive/Intransitive status at a glance makes this book a must have for the Sanskrit Grammarian and Scholar.
