What is it about?

Use of complementary alternatives such as a back massage in the evening to promote sleep for rehab patients. This was a tradition in nursing years ago that has fallen by the wayside. Complementary and alternative therapies in nursing can provide autonomy within nursing and value added care for rehab patients.

Why is it important?

Nursing has gotten away from once practiced complementary therapies that provided benefit for patients and should resume these practices for optimal patient care and gain a sense of autonomy within the discipline. This study shows promise for healthcare systems aspiring to reach the status of nursing excellence.

Perspectives

This study incorporated staff nurses on a rehab unit in the research project. Staff nurses began to understand the research process .
