What is it about?

This article includes the results obtained in three focus groups comprising first-year students of Journalism and Media Studies at Universidad Europea de Madrid. The aim of this study is to observe the evolution of the subjects’ online news reading habits. The first two focus groups were conducted in 2013 and the last one in 2017. These four years saw significant changes in digital media as regards interaction and visual content. Therefore, we wanted to study how these factors influenced the subjects’ reading process. We also consider the use of different formats and devices (tablet, laptop, e-reader, mobile phone, and paper) for decoding news published in Spanish daily El Mundo, analysing the students’ choices. After the activity, it was found out the sample’s reading habits were affected by the increase of the digital devices’ popularity, as well as by the rise of the media’s relational dimension during last year.
