What is it about?

This introductory paper discusses, from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, some of the notions commonly addressed in mindfulness and meditation discourse, such as the space of presence, the nature of thoughts and emotions, or the interactive relationship between the experiencer ("observer") and the experienced (observed).

Why is it important?

The paper describes how these notions are modelled in discourse and proposes that such models can be parametrised by means of a combination of linguistic and conceptual metaphors, metonymy, image schemas and scripts. In that discussion the paper also taps into the notions of conceptual vs linguistic modelling of such experiences.

Perspectives

This is an introductory, theoretical paper written out of my interest in creating stronger connections between contemplative practice (particularly representative folk models of experience activated therein) and the cognitive linguistic perspective. It attempts to lay some of the foundations for further studies and applications.
