What is it about?

This study examines how common overweight and obesity are among adults working in urban markets in Douala, Cameroon, and how their daily lifestyle habits contribute to these conditions. It looks at factors such as diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, sleep, and other everyday behaviors to understand why some people are more likely to become overweight or obese. The findings can help inform public health programmes, encourage healthier lifestyles, and support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases and promoting healthier communities.

Why is it important?

This study is important because it provides local evidence on overweight, obesity, and lifestyle practices among adults working in urban markets in Douala, Cameroon; a population that has received limited attention in health research. By identifying the lifestyle factors associated with overweight and obesity, the findings can guide targeted health education, prevention strategies, and public health interventions. The study also provides valuable evidence for policymakers and health professionals to make informed decisions and contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases.

Perspectives

This study provides a foundation for future research and public health action on overweight and obesity in Cameroon. It highlights the need for continuous health education, regular screening, and lifestyle improvement programmes among working adults. The findings can be used to develop targeted interventions in markets and other workplaces, inform national health policies, and encourage further studies in different regions and population groups. Ultimately, the study supports efforts to build healthier communities and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in Cameroon.
