What is it about?

Both periodontal diseases( diseases related to gum and tooth supporting tissues which without treatment will end to tooth loss) and hyper lipidemia are as risk factors for cardiovascular events. To investigate the relation between hypertriglyceridemia and Gemfibrozil consumption with periodontal parameters this study was done as a cross-sectional study. 3 groups of patients( 30 normal , 30 with hypertriglyceridemia, 30 with high level of triglyceride level but under treatment with Gemfibrozil equal or more than 3 months) were examined with regard to periodontal clinical parameters such as pocket depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing and plaque index. The results showed statistically significant difference between normal Triglycerides group and the other groups in periodontal parameters it means worse periodontal status was seen in participants with high triglycerides without treatment and participants under drug therapy had better periodontal condition in comparison with the patients without drug consumption.

Why is it important?

with regard to correlation between periodontal disease and hyper triglyceridemia with cardiovascular disease, it is important to have and maintain a normal periodontal condition in order to have better control on the level of plasma triglycerides level and also to prevent or control cardiovascular diseases.

Perspectives

Regular laboratory tests will help people to get information about the elements such as LDL,HDL,TG which are considered as risk factors for cardiovascular events , also regular check-up by a dentist will help people to maintain their gum and teeth in healthy status, because periodontal diseases are mentioned as risk factors for some of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, low-birth weight , pre-eclampsia.
