What is it about?

A total of 25 patients were treated with a split mouth procedure. On one side Er:YAG laser was used while on the contralateral teeth were cured with an ultrasonic scaler. Parameters such as plaque index, gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment level were recorded before treatment, at 3, 12 and 24 years.

Why is it important?

Er:YAG laser resulted to be more efficient in periodontal treatment at 2 years follow up

Perspectives

Writing this article was a good work as it finally established a true comparison between laser and ultrasounds. Of course a laser device is much more expensive and can not be installed in a dental chair, which may result in a less comfortable workflow.
