What is it about?

This case study offers an inspiring and important account of one woman's journey from multiple hospitalizations and ongoing deep depression including suicidal ideation, to a place where she experiences no psychiatric symptoms. Some interesting aspects of the story involve the failure of the system to ask about childhood trauma and address her trauma rather than just her symptoms. The importance of hope and the idea that recovery is indeed possible was essential for her ability to move forward. The benefits of counseling were highlighted as well as the pain caused by health and mental health providers who minimized her experiences and failed to include her voice in decision making.

Why is it important?

This article offers important implications for any professional who interacts with young people experiencing psychiatric symptoms. Taking a trauma-informed approach was highlighted as important. Offering a perspective of hope was essential. And thinking about how the authority of providers is communicated as well as how to infuse client voice in decision making is also indicated. Much can be learned from this account that translate far beyond on person's experiences.

Perspectives

I am grateful for the honest and at times raw accounting of this personal, inspiring and at times painful story of mental health recovery.
