What is it about?

Nothing is worse than asking a tool to measure something that it cannot. Focusing on outcomes relevant to experiences that patients have when living with chronic illnesses, this article attempts to better describe the outcomes of interest, and to examine the use of mHealth apps to measure those outcomes.

Why is it important?

As more and more mHealth apps and websites become mainstream, it is important to know how mHealth can help researchers measure theoretical and clinical outcomes of interest.

Perspectives

I really enjoyed working on this article, the two nursing theories it features, Meleis' Transitions and Mishel's Uncertainty in Illness, have complementary outcomes. I believe that this article exhibits the value of understanding how measures are actually operationalized using mHealth interventions. As these technological interventions continue to become part of the health research landscape we must be clear about the things we are actually measuring.
