What is it about?

Low Fruit/Vegetable diet seems to be a global public health problem. We surveyed 777 participants from the general population in public places all around the Mashhad City, Iran in 2014. A standardized checklist about socio-demographic characteristics and possible related factors and stages of change questionnaire (6 stages: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparing, action, maintenance, and termination) were used for data collection.

Why is it important?

We found that 254 (47.7%) and 299 (59.8%) of participants were in pre-action stages of fruit and vegetable consumption, respectively. Smoking (Odd Ratio=3.2) increased and believing that this is good for the body (Odds Ratio=0.12) decreased the chance of being in the pre-contemplation stage for fruits. Being physically active (Odds Ratio=2), low agreement with health benefits of vegetables (Odds Ratio=8) and low agreement with “vegetables make more diet variability” (Odds Ratio=4) increases the chance of being in the pre-contemplation stage for vegetables.

Perspectives

Targeting the items that were found as the pros and cons of fruit and vegetable consumption should be considered by public health decision makers.
