What is it about?

SHIP® is an alternative to exposure therapy for treating conditions like PTSD, although it relies on an individual's ability to visualise imagery. We investigate the use of VR to assist using a randomised controlled trial. We found VR to be useful as a cognitive stimulus and in eliminating distractions to help individuals with the visualisation process.

Why is it important?

Exposure therapy relies on the symptomatic treatment of phobic reactions in artificial settings which can limit the extent to which the treatment assists individuals in real-life situations. SHIP® aims to treat the source of traumatic events rather than replace one's response to them, although it relies on individuals' ability to visualise specific imagery. The use of VR can help individuals with low imaginative potential overcome this difficulty when undergoing SHIP® therapy.
