Why is it important?

Smoking in pregnancy has multiple health harms for mother and baby; some of which are experienced immediately and others throughout their lives. Understanding what helps women to quit - and why - is really important if they are to be supported successfully. This can only be achieved through interpretive methods.

Perspectives

Women generally want the best for their babies but nevertheless some find it very difficult to stop smoking. They may not even want to, as they see greater benefit in continuing compared with stopping. Nevertheless it is really important that they are making a fully informed choice. Smoking myths still abound. Also, smoking needs to be seen as only a part of a pregnant woman's life. Stop smoking support mechanisms need to be put in place with this in mind, as part of a holistic approach i.e.including addressing other contextual issues and anxieties that surround her.
