What is it about?

The goal of this study was to investigate the rate of extubation failure (EF) among intubated preterm infants admitted to a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Oman, as well as the risk variables related to EF.

Why is it important?

Our findings showed that preterm newborns admitted to NICU in Oman had an EF rate that was within international standards. Only gestational age of fewer than 28 weeks was found to be a predictor of extubation failure. Given that, it is important to take extreme prematurity into account during the extubation procedures, and further implement strategies to reduce extubation failure in this group.
