What is it about?

Every year at Norwegian universities and university colleges, well over a hundred master's theses are written on real estate and/or planning issues. In addition, there are at any given time a good handful of PhD candidates/PhD students who write dissertations on real estate and/or planning issues. Together, these students carry out a very extensive research work.

Why is it important?

Unfortunately, much of this research work gets few readers. One way to increase the number of readers of the students' research work is to distill some of the master's theses and parts of the PhD theses into articles in Norwegian-language journals such as Kart og Plan. In the winter of 2024, we invited former and current students and research fellows to write articles for Kart og Plan based on their master's theses or PhD theses. During spring 2024, we received a number of abstracts for possible articles. The result was a total of five scientific (peer-reviewed) articles published in this special issue of Kart og Plan on Student-Driven Research.

Perspectives

Together, these five scientific articles cover a wide range of real estate and planning issues, such as – but not limited to – challenges in owning and disposing of agricultural property together with one or more others; distribution of potential value creation that may result from the transformation and development of properties in urban areas; land parcels that can contribute to better transport infrastructures; trade-offs between plans, exemptions and biodiversity; and impact assessments that can help decision-makers make better-informed decisions on land-use and planning issues.
